The Ultimate Love Spell

These two beautiful people are my parents. This picture was taken during their wedding reception. I love this picture because there is so much joy and hope in their eyes. All couples begin this way. So open, optimistic and ready to take over the world with love as their anchor. The act of marriage is literally the most potent love magic that there is. All of the components are there. You have two people in love and full of commitment (intention). You have someone to preside over the ceremony (to guide the intention). There are witnesses, usually people close to the couple, who "stand up" for them (aid in protecting the intention). The ceremony include vows (incantation) to help bind their intention. There is ritual dress, music, location, and food. Yep, marriage has love spell written ALL over it. Something as powerful as this is meant to last a lifetime.

However, sometimes a marriage can be difficult to navigate and maintain. What new thought processes can we bring to our unions to help give it the turbo boost that it needs to survive?

In Sobonfu Some's book :The Spirit of Intimacy: Ancient African Teachings in Ways of Relationships discusses at great length the power and purpose of marriage as it is seem by the Dagra people of Burkina Faso. She states that:

"Marriage is a way for spirit to bring its support for two people into one greater energy. It brings together two or many lines of ancestors, two cultures, and many different ways to look at the world. . .

It is a way of bringing two people's gifts together in order to strengthen the and make them even better. . ."

I love the idea that a marriage is about more than just the feelings two people share. Once the decision to marry is made it has a rippling effect. One that is designed to alter and improve the lives of the couple and the community at large. Everyone is meant to benefit when a couple marries. In Western culture we seldom see images of couples being loved and supported in a way that is positive. Married couples are functioning as independent "units" who have sometimes distanced themselves from friends and family to have a "fresh" start. Perhaps it is time to revisit some of these practices and alter them to provide more support for those who decide to make this monumental step.

The truth of marriage is everything that the fantasy isn't. Marriage is not just a choice but a decision. A decision to wake up and love and honor your partner everyday. Marriage doesn't exist on an island it needs fuel, and that fuel is purpose. A marriage needs to be contributing something to the community and they need a loving and supportive community to help them thrive and survive.

Every time two people make the decision to bind their intention the universe recognizes and responds to it and the world has the opportunity to become a better place.
